4 Ways to Deal With an Office Crush
4 Ways to Deal With an Office Crush 4 Ways to Deal With an Office Crush You definitely know the dangers of dating somebody in the workplace. Will engaging with this individual give both of us an out of line bit of leeway or weakness at work? In what capacity will our relationship be seen by our chief and associates? In the event that we begin dating and, at that point have a troublesome separation, in what capacity will it influence our capacity to cooperate? Be that as it may, when you have a smash on a coworker, those concerns can without much of a stretch fall by the wayside. You see this individual consistently, in their component, accomplishing excellent work-entirely soon, that sane voice in your mind gets calmer and calmer and the feelings become difficult to disregard. What would it be advisable for you to do (moreover, you know, check the dating strategies in your worker handbook)? In case you're winding up considering a work environment sentiment you don't know you should seek after, here are four things to remember. 1. Recollect That Feeling Doesn't Always Mean Acting It's alright to like somebody anybody, anyplace, wherever. In any case, loving somebody doesn't really imply that you have to follow up on those emotions. Set forth plainly: You can appreciate an inclination, while never following up on it. Utilize your judgment to conclude, This is an opportunity to feel, and this is a chance to act. 2. Recall That You-Not Your Feelings-Are in Control Your emotions don't control you. You are in control. On the off chance that it feels like your feelings are assuming control over, that implies that you've permitted extraordinary sentiments to develop for a really long time, similar to steam in a tea pot. The uplifting news? When you discharge those feelings securely, they won't rule you any longer. There are such a large number of approaches to discharge repressed feelings. Shouting into a cushion. Smacking a pad with a tied up towel. Painting, composing, or singing noisily while vocalizing your emotions for all to hear. The more physical, the better. 3. Recall That You Don't Have to Feel Guilty (in Fact, it's Dangerous on the off chance that You Do) I like my associate however I shouldn't! I realize I shouldn't be pulled in to my chief, yet I am-I feel horrible for feeling thusly. Blameworthy musings like these resemble tossing gas on a fire. They're risky, in light of the fact that you're undeniably bound to do undesirable and unseemly things when you're feeling regretful. Blame twists our capacity to think unmistakably, prompting musings like: What the hell, I've just ruined everything by experiencing passionate feelings for my wedded chief (despite the fact that nobody knows), so I should seek after this. In any case, recollect, once more: You are in control. Not your musings. Not your emotions. 4. Recollect That You Are Allowed to Enjoy the Excitement Having a work environment pound can be fun, energizing and even gainful! You may wind up dressing all the more forcefully, shouting out in gatherings all the more promptly, adding to ventures in a greater way-all since you like the way that unique individual face illuminates when you've worked superbly. When you get coerce off the beaten path, you can get a kick out of the rush and the sparkles. Furthermore, with those cheerful flashes in your heart, you can move into a positive attitude one that will permit you to serenely consider the upsides and downsides of beginning a relationship with your colleague. Padded Cap May Protect Baseball Pitchers
Cushioned Cap May Protect Baseball Pitchers Cushioned Cap May Protect Baseball Pitchers Cushioned Cap May Protect Baseball Pitchers Spring is close, proficient baseball players are limbering up all through Arizona and Florida, and around the nation guardians are marking their kids ready for spring recreational baseball and softball programs. In contrast to football, where the discussion over how to shield players from blackouts is tightening up, baseball presents less dangers. In any case, line drives split straightforwardly back at the pitcher do happen, with possibly heartbreaking outcomes. Players searching for security currently have a choice, with Major League Baseball as of late endorsing an infusion formed cushioning that can be fitted into a players top. The item, called isoBLOX, gives frontal head security from line drives arriving at 90 mph and side assurance along the sanctuary of 85 mph, as indicated by its maker. MLB, which has been working with different merchants on the venture, set an insurance edge of 83 mph, which it says is the normal speed of a line drive arriving at the pitching hill. The cushioning is made of hexagon-formed infusion shaped polymers associated by a pivot, and fitted with a froth substrate, says Bruce Foster, CEO of 4Licensing Corp., parent organization of isoBLOX. Upon sway, the cushioning flexes and diffuses the power, he says. The cushioning adds one-half inch thickness to the front of the top, an inch as an afterthought and it gauges seven ounces. Cultivate says his firm will visit all significant class spring preparing camps to present the cushioning and instruct players on dangers. There is no order on utilizing the security and Foster recognizes the trouble in getting purchase in, at any rate at the expert level. Other than engaging convention, When youre 21 you think youre strong, Foster says. What's more, there is no one not any more offbeat than a pitcher. Pitching is a work of art. Maker claims, IsoBLOX joined with conventional flexible foam brings about unrivaled effect obstruction. Picture: isoBLOX Contrasts On account of the essential contrasts between the games, head assurance in baseball has never been the concern all things considered in football. There, worries over different blackouts and related mind harm have started examination into how different brands of caps and their inside cushioning and insurance framework perform against rotational speeding up powers that curve and player the cerebrum inside the skull. Prior this year, the Virginia Tech-Wake Forest University School of Bioengineering and Sciences appraised 18 brands of head protectors for insurance against direct increasing speed and rotational quickening. Direct increasing speed are the front-to-back powers that can cause wounding and seeping in the mind; rotational quickening are powers that curve the cerebrum inside the head, causing blackouts. Be that as it may, baseball doesn't by and large need to stress over blackouts. For baseball, tests were performed by free research facilities under MLB rules calling for security at 83 mph. That is beneath the National Operating Committee on Standards for Athletic Equipment standard seriousness file of 1,200, considered the limit for skull cracks and horrendous cerebrum wounds. Cultivate says his firm drew closer MLB in March 2013 and finished testing late in the year. Five significant association pitchers were struck in the head by line drives in a five-month stretch of 2012-13, and seven others inside the previous six seasons, as indicated by distributed reports. While Foster recognizes the trouble in getting significant leaguers to utilize the assurance, he says his firm has been overpowered with questions from guardians, and sees the young market as rich for development. This is well past what we thought and shows how fixed guardians are on the wellbeing of their children, he says. The firm intends to start selling cushioned tops and a shirt fitted with the cushioning in retail outlets this spring. Creation The cushioning is created in sheets that can be handily cut to the suitable shape, says Foster. Planning head assurance was more unpredictable than essentially embeddings the cushioning into chest insurance or security for legs and arms. There is air behind a chest defender, says Foster, calling attention to that the airbag impact diffuses the effect. That impact is lost in head insurance, so builds consolidated two sorts of the cushioning to be fitted into a top. isoBLOX can be made out of various polymers, he says. You can make it fragile or make it adaptable. With the head, we needed to join two kinds of isoBLOX sheets. He says the twofold layer beat different variants of single-sheet security. While the cushioned top can offer some assistance, excepting a type of face security, pitchers stay helpless against balls hit legitimately at the face. As a result of the weight and insurance level, be that as it may, this offers a level of security never found in baseball, claims Foster. In any case, change comes gradually in the game and Foster knows the weight and distinctive look of the top is sufficient to pursue away most players. The speed of the ball is unfathomable, he says. We need to instruct the player concerning, what are the dangers? The early adopters will most likely be the individuals who have been hit previously. It is a way of life change. In the end well arrive. For Further Discussion This offers a level of security never observed in baseball.Bruce Foster, 4 Licensing Corp.

3 Steps to Your Career Path - Workology
3 Steps to Your Career Path 3 Steps to Your Career Path When you think of your career what comes to mind? Your job? Your past jobs? What you should envision is your future, because your career is much more than the job you have today. When you think of your career what comes to mind? Your job? Your past jobs? What you should envision is your future, because your career is much more than the job you have today. 3 Steps to Your Career Path I met a woman, Tara, in her mid-20s at a networking event who told me that sheâd been in her job at a local non-profit for more than three years and had it down pat. Tara was frustrated because there was no growth in the entry-level position or in the organization. Sheâd hit the ceiling the day she was hired. Tara discovered what she probably already knew a career path wouldnât appear, she had to design her own. I gave her three simple steps that would help her get started. Take stock. Close your eyes and picture what your next job looks like. Responsibilities. Office setting. Boss. Location. Co-workers. Dress code. Open your eyes and answer these questions. What about your current position do you like, what do you not like, and what areas of your arsenal do you want to grow? Are your skills top-shelf or do you need additional training? When you find out what interests you, the career path will start to take shape because youâll have some direction and purpose. Skip this step, and you can get off-track and head down the wrong path. Network. Build a network of people who will help you along your path. They should be in your profession and represent all positions from the board room to the break room. Senior-level, middle-management and entry-level. Stay in touch with them in person, e-mail, Twitter, LinkedIn and they can help you immensely. A solid network is the best place to hear about new job opportunities. And who better to recommend you for a position in a company than someone who already works there. Change jobs. If your current job is no longer fully meeting your needs find another one that does. I told Tara about someone who had her same job 13 years ago who was now a vice president at a local company. If Tara wants to move up, she needs to move out. Sheâll be successful because her career path will start with a plan and a solid network behind her. Preparing for January - Copeland Coaching
Preparing for January In less than three weeks, the race will be on. Are you ready? You may wonder what race Iâm talking about. Itâs time for one of the most important races of your life. The race to your dream job. Over the holidays, hiring slows down. Although it doesnât completely stop, some companies put off hiring new employees until the New Year. First, there are many employees who are on vacation during December. This can make the interview process more difficult with only a partial staff. But, when January begins, all bets are off. Companies start to hire again in full force. The first step to getting ready is having your resume prepared. You also want to update your LinkedIn profile and have a sample cover letter handy just in case. But once you have the basics down, what else should you do? Well, one of the biggest issues that may cause problems is not having a clear direction. Having a perfect resume is just not enough anymore. Itâs important that you can explain to your friends and network what type of job youâre looking for and why. If you arenât sure what you want to be when you grow up, start with a list. Write down all the things youâre good at within the scope of your current job. Include things you did at your previous job. Then, add in skills youâve picked up through hobbies. For example, you may have a business on the side that not only generates income, but also teaches you new things. Compare your list of transferrable skills to various job descriptions. Start a list of possible new careers. Once you have five to 10 new ideas, begin to search within your network for people who work in these career fields. Send them an email and ask if you could take them out for coffee in exchange for picking their brain. Youâll be surprised at how many people will say yes. These coffee meetings are often referred to as informational interviews. Theyâre a chance for you to learn more about another career through networking. They arenât a chance to interview for a job, but to learn about one. And the good news is, most people enjoy talking about themselves â" and helping others. Oftentimes, Iâve found that just a few informational interviews can help my clients to narrow down what they donât want to do, or to get a better idea of what theyâd like to do. Itâs surprising how quickly a short conversation can give you a window into another profession. As you begin to narrow down your career choices, revise your resume, LinkedIn profile and cover letter to match. Begin putting together your elevator pitch. This is a quick summary of what youâd like to do. It helps those around you to recommend opportunities â" and it will leave you prepared to dominate your search in the new year. I hope these tips have helped you. Visit CopelandCoaching.com to find more tips to improve your job search. If I can be of assistance to you, donât hesitate to reach out to me here. By and large, ladies are normally paid 80 pennies for each dollar paid to men. In any case, this hole is much bigger for a few. The normal Latina lady makes just 54 pennies to each dollar paid to a man. However, there is one occupation in the U.S. that pays ladies more than men.The previously mentioned AAUW study found that ladies discount and retail purchasers who purchase stock for an organization to exchange are paid more than their male partners. Reward: that activity appears to be truly fun.But this news probably won't be as ruddy as we might suspect it is.The middle pay of a discount and retail purchaser is just $53,000, and that most likely pays an enormous job in pay value. For the most part, lower paying occupations pay peo ple all the more similarly on the grounds that lowest pay permitted by law laws direct a uniform compensation floor. Much more, the coming of new advancements keeps on rethinking the pursuit of employment scene and ability industry. Consistently, the biological system bit by bit develops as competitor and business requests keep on moving. The eventual fate of the pursuit of employment is still not too far off, however a couple of things are without a doubt. Individuals can expect patterns like man-made reasoning, online personas and portable applications to keep on changing our reality. It is out of order to not recognize the rise of computerized reasoning in the employing and quest for new employment space . Robotization is now making waves today with chatbots, screenings, candidate following frameworks and keen meetings. As managers keep on utilizing AI to refine their enrollment procedure to locate the ideal applicant, work searchers should meet people's high expectations of adjusting to rising advances. Applicants should turn out to be progressively alright with collaborating with machines, from composing bot-accommodating resumes to addressing them all through the employing procedure. While innovation will empower productivity inside the employing procedure by saving an opportunity to finish commonplace errands, competitors and enrollment specialists can likewise anticipate more open doors for publicity and important connections. Computer based intelligence will never supplant human selection representatives in our industry, however it will empower spotters to spend increasingly 'human' time with up-and-comers, said Denis Edwards, Kforce Chief Information Officer. Presently like never before, work searchers are treating the pursuit of employment like a shopping experience, utilizing a normal of 16 to 18 sources when searching for a vocation . They're doing their due constancy to settle on educated choices with imminent managers. Much more along these lines, competitors are progressively getting mindful of a business' image and notoriety. The pursuit of employment of things to come will keep on observing this pattern, with work trackers searching out progressively substance to find out about organizations and their open positions. Friend audit destinations like Glassdoor and internet based life stages will be utilized to accumulate an insider's point of view inside an organization and how workers see an association. Organizations with an upper hand are sharing convincing substance (not simply posting employments) that includes esteem - including why working at their association is not the same as working at comparative organizations, which helps control an up-and-comer's choice to apply or acknowledge an offer, said Allison Kruse, Kforce Director of Content and Social Media. Online brand mindfulness and the executives will be basic for businesses and selection representatives who wish to pull in dynamic and inactive applicants. For any association hoping to pull in ability, the activity searcher's trust will be a definitive objective. On a comparable note, marking and online notoriety will be similarly as significant for competitors looking for a vocation. Gone are the times of mentioned references approving your demonstrable skill and ranges of abilities being sufficient for imminent managers. We presently live in a computerized existence where an occupation searcher's online nearness is similarly as significant as the desired resume. There's a developing want among bosses to encounter competitors in 3D - on paper, face to face and on the web. They're Googling your name and will be for years to come. Up-and-comers who need to find a vocation later on should make the computerized impression businesses need to see. Occupation searchers ought to upgrade their expert image by displaying responsibility to their work, featuring proficient accomplishments, curating industry substance and that's only the tip of the iceberg. Your expert image assumes a crucial job in your vocation. Despite on the off chance that you are presently searching for a new position or not, it is imperative to deliberately plan and effectively deal with your computerized persona , Kruse said. As of late, twenty to thirty year olds entered the workforce and requested employment adaptability, vocation ways and stewardship . Right now entering the market is Gen Z - people conceived during the mid-'90s to the early centuries. This age presently wants work strength rather than millennial occupation bouncing. Developing laborers will probably look for jobs that are reasonable, staple and sought after across different enterprises like social insurance, innovation and fund. Thus, businesses ought to get ready to offer preparing and advancement chances to cultivate vocation development to draw in future occupation searchers. Truth be told, 7 out of 10 individuals state that preparation and improvement openings impact their choice to remain with an organization. Directors must guarantee that there is a speculation procedure adjusted to preparing and improvement needs. This can come through assets, for example, upgraded learning the executives and enablement instruments, information examination, overviews and that's only the tip of the iceberg, said Ashley Ehlinger, Kforce Director of Training and Development. With the beginning of the computerized age, cell phones keep on ascending in fame. The pattern has made another marvel that is just expected to develop - applying to occupations in a hurry . Guide to Self-Employed 401(k) Plans (FAQ)
Manual for Self-Employed 401(k) Plans (FAQ) Kinga/Shutterstock Individual 401(k) plans permit you to begin taking conclusions after you turn 59.5 years old. You can't utilize any full-time workers and have an independent 401(k). In 2019, a worker can contribute up to $19,000 in one year, accepting that you're under 50 years of age. Yearly or upkeep charges for solo 401(k) designs ordinarily run somewhere in the range of $20 and $200, and they are charge deductible. The quantity of individuals who maintain their own business keeps on drifting up. As indicated by the Bureau of Labor Statistics, 9.6 million individuals worked for themselves in 2016, and that is anticipated to increment to 10.3 million by 2026. Working for yourself may enable you to get more cash-flow than you would working for another person, however it likewise implies you have to have your own retirement plan set up. One of the most well known retirement plans for free laborers is an independently employed 401(k). We addressed two monetary specialists to discover how these retirement plans work. Logan Allec, CPA and proprietor of the individual fund site Money Done Right, and Adam Bergman, a prepared assessment lawyer and leader of IRA Financial Trust and IRA Financial Group, offered their experiences about these plans, including the top level augmentations, charges, speculations and expenses. Manager's note: Looking for a representative retirement plan for your business? Round out the underneath survey to have our seller accomplices get in touch with you with free data. What is an independently employed 401(k) plan? Allec: This arrangement passes by numerous names, including solo, individual and single-k, however they all mean a 401(k) retirement reserve funds plan for the independently employed individual. You can contribute a lot of cash to this arrangement consistently and afterward begin taking appropriations from the record after you turn 59.5 years old. What is simply the best retirement plan for an utilized individual? Allec: I imagine that, for most organizations, the independent 401(k) is the best. Numerous independent companies can contribute more to an independent 401(k) than, state, a SEP at a similar pay level. With an IRA, you can just contribute $6,000 (50 years or under) or $7,000 (50 years or over) in 2019. With a SEP IRA, you can't contribute as both manager and representative, just as a business. [Interested in worker retirement plans? Look at our audits and best picks.] Who can have an independent 401(k) plan? Allec: 1. You're required to put forth independent work salary from your own attempts; typically you create an item or offer an assistance. You could likewise offer types of assistance as a self employed entity, such as driving for Uber or dealing with a 1099 reason for an enormous organization. 2. A sole ownership, restricted obligation organization (LLC), S company, C enterprise or constrained association would all be able to set up an individual 401(k). 3. Your business can't utilize any all day laborers other than yourself. Would you be able to have representatives and open a solitary k? Allec: You can't have any full-time representatives, yet you can contract with specialists or utilize low maintenance representatives who don't work over 1,000 hours per year in your business. Note that not all individual 401(k) plans consider low maintenance workers, so make certain to check with your supplier before recruiting representatives. How would you start one of these 401(k) plans? Bergman: You have to choose a provider. One of the most well-known approaches to build up one of these plans is to experience a bank. You generally aren't charged an expense for these, however your speculation choices are constrained to the monetary items the bank or money related organization sells. You can likewise experience a financier. What's more, there are self-coordinated independent 401(k) plan report suppliers, which don't sell ventures and will permit you to set up a self-coordinated independent 401(k) plan to make elective resource speculations, for example, land, just as access all other accessible arrangement alternatives, for example, Roth commitments and a $50,000 advance choice. When would it be a good idea for me to begin an independently employed 401(k)? Bergman: Start early â" the more youthful, the better â" and be steady. At whatever point you can, you need to concede burdens as opposed to settling charges. You additionally need to augment the measure of cash you'll have in retirement. To make arrangement commitments to an independent 401(k) for 2018, it should be set up by April 15, 2019. On the off chance that you set it up after that date, every one of your commitments go towards 2019. What amount would you be able to add to an individual 401(k)? Allec: as far as possible have both a representative and manager part. You fill both those jobs. In 2019, a representative can contribute up to $19,000 on the off chance that he is under 50. For those 50 or more seasoned, the most extreme is $25,000. The $6,000 distinction is a trick up arrangement, which means more seasoned people can spare more for their retirement. Concerning the business part, you can make a nonelective (charge deductible) commitment to the 401(k) of 25% of your Form W-2 wages. For instance, on the off chance that you gain $100,000 in compensation in 2019, you can contribute $19,000 as a worker and $25,000 (25%) as a business for an aggregate of $44,000. For a sole ownership, the business segment is 20% of your net gain from independent work, which is determined as your independent work salary as wrote about Schedule C, less your conclusion for half of independent work charges paid. At the point when you contribute as both a representative and a business, the limit sum is $56,000 in case you're under 50 and $62,000 in case you're 50 or more established. These cutoff points for the most part change each year, and commonly they go up to modify for expansion. The expansion is generally a round number, not a rate. In the event that your life partner works for your business and is redressed, the person can take an interest in your business' independent 401(k) at indistinguishable cutoff points from above. Would you be able to contribute a singular amount to an independently employed 401(k)? Bergman: by and large, truly, an independently employed individual can make a worker deferral singular amount commitment to an arrangement insofar as the person has adequate earned income. However, on account of a W-2 proprietor/representative, the worker deferral commitment ought not be more than the salary earned for that pay period. On account of manager benefit sharing commitments, those can be made by the business in a singular amount. How does the cash develop in an independently employed 401(k)? Bergman: Depending on the supplier you decide to house your arrangement, you can put resources into nearly anything. Be that as it may, on the off chance that you select a money related foundation to supervise your arrangement, you should put resources into their items. Something else, openings stay boundless. Go the customary course with stocks or shared assets, or go to elective speculations like land, gold or cryptographic forms of money. What expenses are related with an independent 401(k)? Allec: Annual or upkeep charges for these plans for the most part run somewhere in the range of $20 and $200. You'll pay the least if your requirements are straightforward â" you don't have any representatives other than yourself, there's no rollover, and you're OK with putting resources into a spending business association's items. In the event that you have all the more fascinating venture hungers, another supplier can suit those. These suppliers for the most part charge higher expenses to keep up your arrangement, however you additionally have greater adaptability with your venture and plan choices. Is an independent 401(k) charge deductible? Bergman: Yes, by utilizing your business assets to add to your 401(k), you're qualified to guarantee a finding for the expense of the arrangement and its support charges. This lessens your business' annual assessment commitment. Would i be able to pull back supports punishment liberated from this arrangement? Bergman: You can acquire up to $50,000 or half of the record esteem, whichever is less, for any reason at a low financing cost. As of March 1, 2019, the most reduced financing cost was prime at 5.5%. To maintain a strategic distance from charges, this advance must be reimbursed inside five years of the advance date, and installments must be made in any event quarterly. To what extent do you have once a past 401(k) is ended to fold those assets into another independent 401(k)? Bergman: all in all, when the choice is made by the business to end the arrangement, the arrangement member will by and large need to move those assets over the span of the assessment year, however it should be done when sensibly conceivable. What are the most well-known slip-ups individuals make with their independently employed 401 (k) plans? Allec: Overcontributing is the biggest misstep. At the point when you find you've placed an excess of cash into your arrangement, summon your supplier right. They can assist you with pulling back the overcontributed sum so you won't need to pay burdens on it. Another normal mistake is breaking one of the disallowed exchange rules. For instance, your arrangement purchases a house in Florida and rents it out as a venture. On the off chance that you need to take a family excursion to Disney World, you can't remain in that house. When you've put resources into elective resources and disrupt the norms, you will be exposed to duties and punishments. Continuously ensure your supplier goes over the denied rules with you when you open your individual 401(k). The last slip-up numerous individuals make isn't getting their independent 401(k) set up before the year's over. 50 Google Searches to See If The Writing Is On the Wall
50 Google Searches to See If The Writing Is On the Wall It was cool to see my friend on the Huffington Post. Looks like this was her third article there: 50 Google Searches to Avoid a Layoff or Bad Employer As you look through Susans 50 suggestions, it looks kind of dooms-dayish and depressing. You are looking for bad news or dirt on a company. Before I was laid off I saw and read the proverbial writing on the wall. But I just didnt believe it. It wasnt believable until the moment I heard, over the phone, that I was being laid off. It just seemed surreal. It seemed like a bad dream. It couldnt happen to me, I thought. But it could, and it did. The writing was there, real, and true. If you think you see writing on the wall you might have it confirmed by a few of Susans 50 search suggestions. (But if you dont get any results from those search queries, it doesnt mean that your gut instinct is wrong) 50 Google Searches to See If The Writing Is On the Wall It was cool to see my friend on the Huffington Post. Real Career Girls Nellie Akalp of CorpNet.com gives Entrepreneurial Inspiration
Real Career Girls Nellie Akalp of CorpNet.com gives Entrepreneurial Inspiration We are a generation of ideas. We are all trying to cook up the next big thing, and dreaming of setting up our own business. Our entrepreneurial spirit is soaring higher than ever, which makes it very important to find role models. One role model whom I found really amazing was Nellie Akalp. Nellie is a serial entrepreneur, small business advocate, speaker and author. She is the founder CEO of CorpNet.com, an online legal document filing service, where she helps entrepreneurs start, grow and maintain a business. In my interview with her, she exudes not just the air of success and ambition, but also a strong display of heart and passion. She is a dreamer and a go-getter, and it is a pleasure to have her here on Ms. Career Girl! Nellie shares her expert tips with readers at Forbes, Entrepreneur and Mashable and is a regular guest expert on the Fox Small Business Center. She was named a Top 100 Small Business Influencer in 2012, 2013, and 2014 by Small Business Trends. Nellie has presented a workshop at Small Biz Expo and sat down with members of Girls in Tech, General Assembly and more to inspire and motivate others to make their business dreams a reality. Read my interview with Nellie below! Tell us about your career. 1 How did your journey as CEO of CorpNet.com start? After we sold my first company to Intuit back in 2005, we took a few years off to spend time with the kids, work out and relax. We soon realized that we were too young, too bored, too passionate and too motivated to take on an early retirement so after our non-compete agreement with Intuit expired, we decided to get back into the document filing industry with the launch of CorpNet.com in 2009. We wanted to get back into the industry because that is where our passion and excitement liesâ¦IN Small Business..â¦making peopleâs small business dreams into a reality! We wanted to get back into the industry because that is where our passion and excitement liesâ¦IN Small Business..â¦making peopleâs small business dreams into a reality! 2 What about your work would you consider that most gratifying or fulfilling? I love small business; I love entrepreneurship and for me the most gratifying and fulfilling part of my job is that I get to work with startups and entrepreneurs all day long. I love that I get to help them in making their small business dreams into a reality and watch them blaze their own trails. To me, there is nothing more gratifying than seeing someone elseâs true passion come to fruition and watch them become truly successful at it. 3 What would you say is the most important milestone of your company so far? In business, I started a company in 1997 and sold it at the age of 30 for a very large sum of cash to a publicly traded company. Then took 3 years off and started all over again in 2009 from scratch and built my current company which is again one of the top players in my industry. I have been awarded as a top 100 small business influencer by Small Business Trends 3 consecutive years in a row since 2012 and I am able to contribute content for the highest esteemed outlets such as Forbes, Entrepreneur, Mashable, and The Huffington Post to share small business and entrepreneurial tips with others. In my personal life, my biggest accomplishment to date has been giving birth to my four beautiful children and being happily married to my husband and business partner of over 17 years. Tell us your secret! 4 How does a woman like you keep it all together? Do you have a routine or trick to keep balance? In my opinion itâs all about being organized, planning ahead and staying one step ahead of your game. I find that the âtrickâ to staying balanced in life is to realize that there will be no perfect 50/50 balance. Sometimes things with work come up while I am with my family (itâs bound to happen especially since I am married to my husband and business partner) and sometimes things with the kids come up at work. You just have to take it one thing at a time, day by day. Yes, plan ahead, but know that plans donât always work out perfectly. Staying as organized as possible will allow for hiccups here and there but for the road to still stay smooth. 5 What motivates and inspires you? I have a ton of passion, patience, drive, and endurance for volatility and risk and for the unknown. I love small business. I love entrepreneurship. I love what I do and I am truly passionate about what I do because to be able to leave my little one at home and be away from her for 6-8 hours daily (even though I get visits from her to the office during lunch) and come to work each day and truly work for free (because I reinvest all the profits back in to my business right now in order to grow the business). You have to love and believe and be passionate about whatever it is you are doing if you are going to find success! 6 Who is your role model? Famous or not? My husband and business partner of 21 years (married 17 years), Phil Akalp, is my most important role model. Phil is my best friend, my soul mate and most importantly the best role model for me in that he always pushes me to continuously improve myself in all aspect of my life whether business or personal. Even though sometimes he may be a tough critic and can be taken as being mean, he has a genuine heart and truly wants me to be the best that I can be in anything I set my mind to. He has made a huge impact in my life. If it werent for him, I wouldnt be the wife, mother, and business expert I am today. 6 When you feel your absolute BEST, what are you wearing? When I feel my absolute BEST, I am dressed in the color blue (light and dark blue or Navy) typically with leggings and a suit jacket. Something fun yet professional and edgy with heels or boots. 8 Do you have a personal mantra or motto you live by? Do what you love and love what you do each and every day otherwise, why do it at all?Nellie Akalp Give us some start-up advice! What was the biggest challenge to building your own start up? Doing the things I love to do vs. the must doâs of the business. The bottom line is that as a small business owner, you have to do it all; certainly others can help you in the process and you can delegate a ton of it out, but at the end of the day, you still have to monitor it all as itâs âyourâ business. You just have to prioritize your days in such a way that you can hit those âhave to tasksâ weekly in between the tasks you love to do. Would you recommend any particular industries that aspiring entrepreneurs should be looking into? I would recommend to go after what you are inspired by and passionate about. As an entrepreneur, you may have to do work without getting paid for it, so make sure you really love it! What is the one most important advice you would give a woman who wants to build her own start up? My best advice for other entrepreneurs is to understand success is something you achieve based on how much you put into whatever it is that you would like to see success from. Certainly others can help you, just as others can provide obstacles, but ultimately you make your own success and your own failure. What I know for sure is that if you want to have success and be successful, you canât make success your goal. The key is not to worry about being successful, but to instead work toward being significant â" and the success will naturally follow. If you have the vision, drive, and the determination, and you immerse yourself into whatever it is that you are trying to do, you can and will accomplish that goal in the face of any obstacle or challenge, the rest will come.. And that in itself is success!!! I truly believe, that the reason Iâve been able to be so financially successful is because my focus has never, ever for one minute been money even to this day. I would do wha t I do today and not get paid for itthat is how much I love what I do and thatâs how you know you are doing the right thing.

How to Use Growth Hacking for Recruitment Marketing
How to Use Growth Hacking for Recruitment Marketing Some of you may be familiar with growth hacking already, whereas for others of you its possible this is a new concept. To learn what its all about and how one can hack some growth, Ive had a chat with Kieran Flanagan. He is the Marketing Director of HubSpot EMEA, a conference speaker, blogger and NLP practitioner. What exactly is growth hacking? Im going to give you the way I use it because growth hacking is a term that people use in all different ways at the moment mostly because its a such a popular topic. The way I see growth hacks are theyre really a result of marketers experimenting with different marketing tactics until they discover clever and original ones that they can use to grow their own brand, accelerate their growth. And generally the way I think about growth hacks as well is that they work for a defined period of time. I think that one of the biggest things around growth hacks is you discover something and were so tuned in to sharing everything that works these days because we just want to produce content. That we share something with the whole marketing world, Hey, this thing works really well, and youll see that everyone will pick that up. Usually when theres certain saturation point, those growth hacks dont work as well. For me, I think if I would distill that into a sentence, its really clever and original tactics that work for a defined period of time that can really accelerate your growth as a business. Why companies need to be hacking their growth I guess that instead of thinking about it as a company trying to hack their growth, I think for it to be applicable to a wider set of marketers but still as valuable, companies should always be running experiments to figure out what tactics they can use to accelerate their growth. I think experiment is the best way to think about it. Are you copying and pasting the playbook that you used from last year and just rerunning the exact same this year, or are you trying to find out are there other things that youre not using that could actually really help you to grow faster? The cost of growth hacking I think a lot of things that come out are actually low cost, different tactics you can use; not always free. There are a lot of different types of growth hacks Ive seen through social advertising and a lot of paid platforms. Again its just this clever way that someones figured out how to use Twitter, Facebook, figured out how to do something with LinkedIn or all these different platforms that can actually help them accelerate their growth before that thing becomes diluted and it no longer works anymore. Step 1: Goal and Targets One of the most important things for marketers is actually being able to set out goals and targets. The first step is really how do I set the goal and the target that Im going to align myself around? What are my most important goals over a defined period of time? An example may be, Hey, I want to grow my blog. I want to grow my blog traffic over the course of this month and my target to achieve is I want to get a 10% increase in that blog traffic from the previous month, or its going to be something like, I want to improve the number of people who engage with the second email over the nurture workflow and I want to improve that engagement by 0.5%. What youre doing there is youre setting really clear goals, very clear targets, but the most important thing is for you to do in that given month that will help you accelerate your growth. Step 2: Insights Insight is probably one of my favourite parts of being a marketer today specifically like most of my time I spend doing online marketing, where you can pull apart things that work and figure out why they work. I have a team of 12 now. Everyone in my team Ive hired myself. One of the traits I look for on people is just this intense curiosity of why things work. For example, why a particular brand is so successful. If you go Google Trends, you see, hey why is this brand getting searched so much over the last couple of years? Why a particular piece of content has been shared so widely, why a particular page ranks for certain key words. The really best marketers will want to know why all of those different things are the way they are. Step 3: Experiment Youve gathered a bunch of research and now youre going to come up with a bunch of different ways for me to try to hit that goal. Not everything can be experiment because what tends to happen in marketing is theres a certain percentage of your traffic leads are just going to come in from things that you know that work. And what you want to try and do is silo aside some of the time for the team to have the freedom to make big bets and run experiments. Step 4: Promoting Like Hell Promotion for me is one of the important topics in marketing today. If you want to be a good marketer, you need to be like Kanye West, hes a self-promoter so if you think of your own content as yourself, you have to be really a great promotion of the things that you or your team do. I guess one quick example Ill share that most people can use, is that were using this a lot for our own big content assets that we promote is, if you think about promotion of content and the success or failure of that promotion, most of it hinges on a title and a snippet because you dont get to see the content until youve engaged with the promotion. Common growth hack mistakes to avoid Companies arent hiring the people with the right skill sets to actually engrain this culture within the company itself. They need to hire people who are marketers but are also very technical, who are very curious about how things work and how they can make them work better. And because they dont do that, what they do is they end up with an annual plan they just roll out each and every year, and its the exact same stuff. Thats why a lot of companies get left behind their competitors who are working at a different pace. If the company doesnt have a culture thats going to appeal to those people when they get in there, those people are going to leave and go somewhere else. The really big thing is a lot of the reasons that marketers join HubSpot is because they cant believe for a company thats quite big now, our sign off process is basically go do it. If you think its a good idea, go do it. Whereas another company, youll be trying to implement something that has to be signed off by four different people before it ever gets done and it really kills the enjoyment from the people who really like experiment and trying new things. What do the next three years hold? I feel like no one can really predict where were going to go in the next three years but I feel like its going to be the exact same way it is now. There are just going to be a bunch of new tactics people are finding that work, people are sharing. Again when you share with a wider marketing community, youre going to have to go find something else because if youre one of the last ones to adopt that, chances are that its not working that well anymore. Things just change so fast. Connect with Kieran on Twitter @searchbrat.

Powerfully Branding Yourself to Lose the Job Interview - Personal Branding Blog - Stand Out In Your Career
Powerfully Branding Yourself to Lose the Job Interview - Personal Branding Blog - Stand Out In Your Career In last weekâs blog we examined how you can win at the face-to-face interview by effectively employing the âleading the witnessâ method/approach. This week weâll take a look at how you can just as quickly and just as easily lose the interview if you unwittingly brand yourself as a ârun-of-the mill,â âme-tooâ candidate. To position this weekâs blog, letâs first take a look at what todayâs job market looks like: Twenty-eight million job openings have been filled in the U.S. thus far in 2011. Yes, you read that correctly! The figure most people focus on, nearly exclusively, is the number of new jobs created, and there is a huge difference between new jobs created and openings actually being filled. Make no mistake about it, these openings are in real companies with real needs and these positions are being filled daily. There are over 69 million job seekers in todayâs job market (14 million unemployed and 55 million currently employed wanting a new opportunity). Unfortunately, most of these 69 million job seekers will not win one of the jobs currently being filled daily. Why? Because they powerfully and effectively brand themselves as ârun-of-the-mill,â âme-tooâ candidates. Branded to not be unique Let me illustrate my point with an analogy. Suppose you are at an automobile dealership and find a car that you like, but you still want to do some more comparison shopping before making your final selection. So, you go down the street to another dealership and find a car you like just as well there. Now the issue becomes, how do you decide which vehicle to buy? You go back to the first dealership and tell the salesperson, âI really like your car but I also like another one at the dealership down the street just as well. Tell me, why should I buy your car instead of the one down the street?â The salesperson adopts his most earnest, sincere look, takes his right hand, balls it up into a fist and slaps his fist into the palm of his left hand and enthusiastically says, âIâll tell you why you should buy my car instead of the one down the street. Mine has an engine, four tires and a gas pedal!â You look at him, dumbfounded, and respond, âHuh? What? I donât get it. How in the world does that differentiate your car from the one down the street? That one also has an engine, four tires and a gas pedal.â And that of course is the message. The salesperson just branded his car as being exactly the same as the one you also liked down the street, or the ones to be found at every other dealership in existence, for that matter. This is precisely what happens day in and day out in interviews. Candidates constantly, and consistently, brand themselves as being just like every other candidate instead of being someone who is unique, different and better, someone a company will almost feel compelled to seriously consider hiring. Let me give you an example from just this past week. Our firm is recruiting for a sales position for a Fortune 500 company. Our process goes like this: The recruiters in our firm proactively recruit passive talent by cold-calling in to competitive firms, as well as look for active talent by posting the job on the Internet. The recruiters review the possible candidatesâ backgrounds, assess if they have the right skill sets, discuss motivations for a possible career change, review the position with the individual and determine his/her genuine level of interest, etc. If a possible candidate is indeed genuinely interested in the opportunity, and if the recruiter deems the person strong enough to move forward, they are scheduled for an interview with me. My role is then to determine if the candidate is strong enough to move forward by arranging a conversation with the hiring manager of the Fortune 500 Company. One of the first questions I always ask a candidate is this: âWhat is it about you that differentiates you from all of the other sales professionals my client will consider for this position?â (And you can substitute any role you may have an interest in interviewing forâ" engineer, accountant, SAP programmer, etc.â"for âsales professional.â) Let me share some of the answers I received from six candidates I interviewed for this position this past week: Candidate 1: âI am determined, motivated and know how to work from a home office.â Candidate 2: âI can build relationships. I am a hard worker and I am motivated.â Candidate 3: âI am a hunter and I am motivated by money.â Candidate 4: âI am dedicated, honest and wonât do anything shady.â Sound like good answers to you? Unfortunately, all four of these candidates powerfully, quickly and effectively branded themselves as simply averageâ"they branded themselves as someone who is just like every other candidate! In other words, they branded themselves as having âan engine, four tires and a gas pedal!â Shouldnât every sales professional be determined, motivated, be able to work from a home office, build relationships, be a hard worker, etc., etc., etc.? I think you get the point. The fifth candidate answered the question this way: Candidate 5: âSkip, I think what differentiates me are three things. First, my business acumen. No one is going to buy anything from me unless my product and service can either make them money or save them money, or ideally both. So I have to find out what the clientâs issues are and how I can then translate what I am offering into a solution that will address and solve those issues, while at the same time, making them money or saving them money. Second, I have solid leadership skills. Sales situations are not always something that you can effectively do alone. I have to be able to be a leader and effectively facilitate teams. These teams can involve people from my own company as well as my client company. And finally, my technical skills. By truly understanding the technical aspects of my product and the application, I can ask the right probing questions to uncover the needs, wants and issues in a clientâs facility. And candidate 6 also delivered a branding message that truly differentiated her from the rest. So obviously, candidates 1 thru 4 âlost the interview.â They are not being passed on to our Fortune 500 client for consideration. As I write this on Friday afternoon, candidate 5, whom we will call Tim, is on a phone interview with the hiring manager of my Fortune 500 client company. This email from the hiring manager just popped up on my computer screen: âSkip, I am not through with my phone interview with Tim, but I can tell you already, he is someone we want to bring in for the final round of interviews. I will let him know that before we hang up.â Just one of the crowd How do you brand yourself: As someone with just âan engine, four tires and a gas pedal?â Or, do you brand yourself as someone with a âfinely tuned, super-charged V8 engine, all-terrain tires, and one that offers unparalleled power and performance, while still offering great fuel economy?â As someone who can âoutperform all other competitors regardless of marketplace conditions.â Ask yourself this question: Which âcarâ would you be most likely to buy? Author: Skip Freeman is the author of âHeadhunterâ Hiring Secrets: The Rules of the Hiring Game Have Changed . . . Forever! and is the President and Chief Executive Officer of The HTW Group (Hire to Win), an Atlanta, GA, Metropolitan Area Executive Search Firm. Specializing in the placement of sales, engineering, manufacturing and RD professionals, he has developed powerful techniques that help companies hire the best and help the best get hired.
