Thermally Conductive Polymers Improve Nanofibers
Thermally Conductive Polymers Improve Nanofibers Thermally Conductive Polymers Improve Nanofibers Bulk polymers are poor heat conductors, so much so that they are generally regarded as thermal insulators, with thermal conductivities around 0.1 Wm-1 K-1. Usually, when researchers try to improve the thermal conductivity of polymers, they put in additives such as carbon nanotubes or other high thermal conductivity fillers. Even so, the thermal conductivity of ansicht composites is typically no greater than one order of magnitude, due to the high thermal interface resistance between the additives and the polymer matrix.Dr. Gang Chen, Soderberg Professor of Power Engineering in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at Massachusetts Institute of Technology, decided to take a different approach to this problem by first testing whether polymers really are intrinsically poor heat conductors.A look at the molecular chain of polyethylene (PE), which consists of covalent carbon-carbon bonds, suggest that heat conduction along the molecular chains should actually be very good, says Chen. There is also fundamental physical inspiration from earlier work by Fermi, suggesting that one-dimensional atomic chains might have infinite thermal conductivity, as well as earlier experimental studies by others showing that stretched polyethylene can indeed possess higher thermal conductivity. To test this further, Chens research team conducted molecular dynamics simulations that proved to kooperation the idea that PE molecules mimic the one-dimensional atomic chain model. They then devised an experimental demonstration and published a paper in the March 2010 issue of Nature Nanotechnology that described their remarkable resultthat by aligning their molecular chains, polymers can be just as heat-conductive as most metals.Chemical structure of polyethylene carbon atoms are shown in black, hydrogen atoms in white (top). Bulk polyethylene containing voids and defects (middle). Stretched po lyethylene microfibre (bottom).Experimental SuccessIt is well known that the mechanical and thermal properties of polyethylene can be improved by processing or stretching bulk samples into thin films or fibers, thereby reducing the number of defects and increasing the chain alignment. To reduce the number of defects even further, Chen scaled down the fiber size (50-500 nm in width and up to tens of millimeters in length) and developed a two-stage heating method to fabricate ultra-drawn nanoscale fibers. A small sample of polyethylene gel was heated to 120 C on a heating stage and an individual suspended fiber drawn from the heated gel using either a sharp tungsten tip or a tipless atomic force microscope (AFM) cantilever. A second heating procedure then heated the fiber and surroundings to 90 C to dry the fiber. The fiber was then mechanically stretched (ultra-drawn) at a controllable speed by rigidly fixing the tungsten tip or AFM cantilever to a motorized control stage. The thermal conductivity of the nanofiber was then measured using a sensitive bi-material AFM cantilever, which can resolve power measurements as low as 0.1 nW.Encouraging ResultsChens research confirmed that stretching nanofibers does contribute to the nanoscale restructuring of the polymer chains. The thermal conductivity of these nanofibers proved to be as high as 104 Wm-1 K-1, about three times higher than previously reported values for micrometer-sized fibers and even higher than that for about half the pure metals, including platinum, iron, and nickel.Chen attributes this high thermal conductivity to the restructuring of the polymer chains by stretching, which improves the fiber quality toward an ideal single crystalline fiber.Such thermally conductive polymers are potentially useful as heat spreaders and could supplement conventional metallic heat-transfer materials, which are used in applications such as solar hot-water collectors, heat exchangers, and electronic packaging, says Chen.An other benefit to thermally conductive polymers is that they would likely be less expensive than conventional metallic heat transfer materials used in many industries. This is especially true for applications where directional heat conduction is important, such as heat-exchanger fins, cell-phone casing, and plastic packaging for computer chips.Furthermore, Chen adds, high-thermal-conductivity polymers may also have other technological advantages that can be applied, because they can be lightweight, electrically insulating, and chemically stable.Since publishing his paper in 2010, Gang has received many requests for fibers from companies across a range of industries, including fabrics. Luckily for these interested parties and others, Chen recently obtained funding for additional research through the Obama administrations Manufacturing Initiative. We can now develop processes to scale up this technology, and hopefully provide samples for real-world applications in the near future, says Chen.Mark Crawford is an independent writer. The thermal conductivity of stretched polyethylene nanofiber can be higher than that for about half the pure metals, including platinum, iron, and nickel.Dr. Gang Chen, Soderberg Professor of Power Engineering, MIT

Have dreams, but have goals, life goals, yearly goals, monthly goals, daily goals.?- ?Denzel WashingtonTheres a very big difference between wanting something in a virtuous way, and pining for something that youre not committed to achieving. The winning way of getting what you want is to practice visualizing your goal and walking through this step-by-step. Everything great begins with your imagination, which I encourage you to stretch and use as creatively as you can to think of exactly what your biggest dreams look like in practice.Visualization is integral to departureing the mental building process of putting ourselves in the position we desire to be?- ?to live. You may say that you want to be a bestselling author, start your own mark eting business or even learn how to play guitar. Thats great. I believe you should absolutely speak those things over your life. But what are you actually doing about in the meantime? For fruchtwein people, the next step is simply to take action. Fine. Seems like a good idea, right? The action most people miss out on?- ?the necessary predecessor?- ?is imagination and visualization. Set the bar high. Imagine yourself playing the guitar, mastering the basic chords and then performing at local clubs. Imagine yourself performing at Madison Square Garden. If youre trying to start your own business, not only do you need a plan, you need a clear vision as to what each step in the process looks like. Know this?- ?nothing will ever go exactly according to plan, but your odds of reaching your goals and success dramatically improve once you put something to plan. The planning phase is not just the verbal and written accord. Its the visualization, the mental walk-through of what you truly want.Bu ilding YourVisionTake this fromBrian Scudamore who detailed his experiencefor Inc.com of how he built a $100 Million multinational companyPeople typically think about goal setting in one of twoways1. This tactic is known as mental contrasting. By following up your pie-in-the-sky Painted Picture with nuts-and-bolts strategic planning, youll have both the inspiration and the gameplan necessary to reach your desired destination. As you use mental contrasting, its critical to do the visualizationandstrategic planning in different places as these two processes require completely different mindsets.Visualization feeds goal planning, which leads to action and a higher-level o f commitment toward achieving your goals and dreams. 10 Accounting Career Lessons
10 Accounting Career Lessons10 Accounting Career LessonsRecruiters know good candidates when they see them. Good applicants for accounting and finance roles have the right mix of experience and software skills, degrees and in-demand certifications, along with tenure in their industry. Good candidates are also equally as great in person as they are on paper. The best candidates, however, have learned a few important career lessons. If youre an accounting candidate, what is this secret sauce that makes hiring managers and recruiters so excited to call you? And maybe mora importantly, what are the factors that deter them from calling you? While a lot of factors make a candidate look great on a resume, there are a number of career lessons that can increase the likelihood youll get a call from a hiring manager or recruiter. There is no carbon-copy accountant that every company is looking to hire. Every industry, company and hiring manager looks for something different. Requirements for qualif ications, certifications and software all depend on what kind of business theyre in.But, if you follow these tried-and-true career lessons, you increase your marketability in the accounting field - and decrease your chances of being passed over in the job search.1. Dont get pigeonholedThe industries that are hardest to transfer out of are banking or financial services, government, and nonprofit organizations. Thats leid to say you should avoid these industries completely. Just dont take a position in them expecting it to lead you to another job in a different industry.Accounting specifications are uniquely different in certain lines of business and dont transfer easily to other industry roles. Even if you have great tenure and experience in one sector, it doesnt necessarily mean you have equal opportunity in another. You may be promotable within these sectors, but not necessarily outside of them.2. Diversify your software experienceQuickBooks experience is great, but having it as t he only accounting software youve mastered wont transfer well to a company thats not using it. Having universal enterprise resource planning (ERP) experience, like SAP, is great to have - and also transferrable. Some of the most common accounting ERPs include JD Edwards, NetSuite, Microsoft Dynamics and Sage, to name a few.3. Dont stay at a company too longGood tenure is important, especially if youre looking for a traditional direct hire, full-time position, but staying somewhere too long can make potential employers weary of your ability and even willingness to learn their processes, software and business. Avoid becoming too stale by being receptive to new opportunities outside of your current company.4. But dont move on too soon If your resume shows a pattern of staying at companies for an average of months instead of years, those are the types of opportunities youre going to attract - short-term, contract assignments. Thats fine, if thats the work you want. In permanent-placem ent recruiting, this is called a job hopper. As a professional, you shouldnt make decisions on changing jobs based on temporary frustrations. If there are situations causing you to make frequent career moves, be prepared to answer questions related to your tenure (or lack thereof) in an interview. Dont approach these questions defensively, but do so with a response youve prepared.5. Use public accounting as a launch padPublic accounting is a fickle thing. Candidates are constantly wanting to get in and candidates wanting to get out. Experience with the Big 4 firms - humorlosigkeit Young, Deloitte, KPMG and PWC - can tee up an accountant for major career success. Ive had many conversations with hiring managers who require Big 4 accounting experience for their openings. Making this choice? Read Private vs. Public Choose Your Accounting Career Path.Professionals who work at smaller, regional firms, of course, can also be top-notch candidates. But candidates who want to move to corpo rate accounting might find that managers are concerned with their ability to focus on one business instead of multiple clients, and whether they have transferrable skills if theyve been responsible for only a fraction of a total accounting process.Public accounting might remind you of the story of the three bears You want to put in just the right amount of time with the right firm.6. Become an Excel masterExcel is the common dominator for most accounting positions. Do yourself a favor and take a course if you havent had regular exposure to it or if you dont use it every day at work. Maybe youll even become an Excel fanatic, like this CPA.7. Create a strategic planWhats your end game? This needs to be the first question you ask yourself before you make a career move, or dont. Dont accept an opportunity just because it crosses your path and sounds interesting. If you want to be a CFO, learn which opportunities will lead you to that end goal, such as earning your CPA or MBA, gaining br oad financial experience, and enhancing your understanding of business, technology and operations by seeking out opportunities that expose you to those areas.8. Beware of moving for money or titleCareer skills and real money come from time and earning promotions. Changing jobs for quick money or to fast track to a different title is not a sound career move. Be ready to put in the work, and the money and titles will follow. If they dont, thats when it would be a good idea to consider making a change.9. Forge a relationship with a recruiterA good recruiter functions as a coach and a resource to help you make strategic choices. They are your eyes and ears on the market, and can alert you of good opportunities that make sense for the career path you define with them.Work with us to find your next job in accounting and finance.10. Know your market worthAs a conscientious professional, its important to be able to quantify your skills - realistically. Some people undersell themselves, whi le others oversell. This leads only to a mismatched placement, and if done too much or too frequently, can derail a career. Once youve assessed your skills, compare them with what the market needs. This gives you a true sense of how marketable you are.The biggest tip for accounting and finance professionals considering career moves is to be honest with themselves. We all think we are the best, that were marketable and that any company would be lucky to have us. But if you arent getting called back for jobs youre applying to, consider it a lesson to take a step back and assess your skill set in relation to the positions. Are you qualified, and do you have most, if not all, of the requirements listed in the job description? What does the supply and demand of talent look like? If you dont know, review accounting and finance trends to learn what skills are in demand and in what markets. Some of the best preparation is to ensure that youre marketable. Then put your best foot forward, maki ng sure the lessons youve learned during your career are clear in your resume and in a cover letter thats tailored for that prized new position.?

Why crying at work isnt necessarily always the worst thing you can do
Why crying at work isnt necessarily always the worst thing you can doWhy crying at work isnt necessarily always the worst thing you can doI have a thing called pseudobulbar affect, which is a long-dense way of saying 8/10 first dates end with me crying into a bowl of tapas.PBA is a condition usually brought on by other neurological disorders that is defined by habitual episodes of inappropriate displays of emotion, i.e crying at the end of Bad Boyz II and laughing when your Aunt Cathy dies (those extremely specific examples are not specific to me.)Because behauptung bouts are so sudden, sufferers of this condition or similar manic-depressive ones, have at some point had to explain there way out of a cry session at work. For the longest time my go to was Ah, man, I still cant believe Crash won Best Picture. (Green Book has provided my alibi with a much needed refurbishing).Follow Ladders on FlipboardFollow Ladders magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfacti on, Neuroscience, and moreAnother popularly adopted maneuver is to position yourself near a bathroom for easy meltdown access- Ah man Indian food. Also, I still cant believe Crash won Best Picture. Both great ways to avoid exposing yourself as an embarrassing-wet weirdo, but the truth of the matter is, work culture has matured immensely in regards to mental health awareness, and theres nothing wrong with occasional public lapses in sanity-within reason. If you are judged harshly for crying when its entirely warranted, it might be a sign of a toxic work culture, explains S. Chris Edmonds, a human resources expert and founder of The Purposeful Culture Group.Having a work culture that appreciates the stresses that leaders and members are going through is an indication of a healthy environment. A modest degree of self-awareness must attend all of this stuff of course in order to effectively promote a meet-me-in-the-middle rapport. If youre a professional with a history of mental health s truggles, its your responsibility to seek treatment of some kind before injecting yourself into a work ecosystem, the same way its encouraged of a company to try and collaborate with the members of their team, and take their medical conditions seriously, whether said conditions are somatic or mental.Dont cry because its over, cry because it happenedUnfortunately, there are preconceived disgraces that preclude everyone from being as honest as they should or could be when it comes to quality tear-time. All of the non-spoken dos and donts of public decorum belong to a term anthropology calls the display rules a rigid rubric that is meant to distinguish how humans, the notoriously incalculable collection of nerves and meat responsible for the Crusades, Global Warming, and giving the movie Crash Best Picture, should socialize and express themselves amongst others. The problem with display rules is that they are willfully indifferent to the mercurial temptations of cohabitation. There aren t any inappropriate places or times to start bawling, there are only inappropriate ways to respond. Incidentally, the other seemingly impenetrable roadblock standing in between us and professional egalitarianism is a national preference for an ala carte adherence to biology. This has become popular with the modern wannabe provocateur. In the same breath theyll posit why minorities are genetically unfit to do what have you, or why women shouldnt lead a business because of science and then unironically submit a sponsor break for Rogain or Testosterad or whatever.A recent survey revealed that 41% of women have cried at work at least once during their careers compared to the 9% of men that admitted to doing so. Figures like these establish an erroneously shameful minority. While its true that biologically speaking women have six times the amount of prolactin than men do, nothing productive comes out of inaugurating a correlation between this useless evolutionary hold-over, and what gend er ought to be weeping the most about what and when. Applying archaic knuckle-dragging functions of biology to a society that has successfully surpassed them places unfair expectations on the non-troglodytes that inhabit it. Author and journalist Anne Kreamer writes,In spite of the cathartic physiological benefits, women who cry at work feel rotten afterward, as if theyve failed a feminism test.Women feel worse after crying at work, while men feel better.More risible than the who, is the when. Sheryl Sandberg, author and Facebooks Chief Operating Officer, has lobbed censure at the stigma surrounding crying at work on several occasions. In a broader sense, Sandberg believes socio-rule books of the like are poorly cloaked efforts to reinforce the workforce food chain. More specifically, shes of the opinion that its unreasonable to compartmentalize human emotion by right of whos in attendance.I dont really believe that we are one type of person, Monday through Friday, 9-to-5, and then a different type of person in the nights and weekends. I think we are, all of us, emotional beings and its okay for us to share that emotion at work, Sandberg told Indias Mint newspaper in a recent interviewOn the topic of the very successful executive, Mrs. Sanberg, the contrary view is at its most willed. In fact, whilst covering Sandbergs statements admonishing the notion of where crying does or doesnt belong, writer Suzanne Lucas raised some forceful considerations.Sandberg wields a certain liberty of vulnerability that many of us simply do not. Exhibiting weakness is not damaging when youve already established yourself as a lion. The road to achieving that moniker provides a much smaller margin for these kinds of displays. Lucas also punctuated her coverage of Sandbergs counterfeit words of solidarity by cautioning the average worker against conflating vulnerability with weakness, explaining sharply,I want to make it clear that, in most situations, crying at work isnt appropria te.When your boss criticizes your work, dont cry. When your co-worker gets the big project you wanted and think youve earned, dont cry. Lucas continues, Crying in these situations doesnt make people feel compassion towards you. It makes them doubt you have what it takes to succeed.Very valid points. A reasoned mind that has read Lucas essay in its entirety would have to assume the writer would excuse instances of mental instability either chronic or circumstantial in her estimation, but even still, speaking strictly from a tactical viewpoint, crying at work yields very little positive effects, even if the consequences are rarely detrimental. That doesnt mean one should make an effort to suppress the need. I guess its up to us sheep to determine when the need is a need and not merely an itch.

Heat, Work, and the First Law of Thermodynamics
Heat, Work, and the First Law of Thermodynamics Heat, Work, and the First Law of Thermodynamics Marks Practical Handbook for Mechanical Engineers calls the first law of thermodynamicsthat energy can neither be created nor destroyedone of the very important laws of nature. As an engineering science, thermodynamics has evolved piecemeal over many years and with contributions from many investigators. A basic form of the first law for simple systems states that the increase in the internal energy of a system is equal to the quantity of heat transferred to the system reduced by the quantity of work done by the systemThis law is a result of the famous experiments James Joule conducted in the 1840s that identified heat as a form of energy having a unique equivalence to work. For generations before Joule, however, heat remained an enigma for scientists.Redefining the engine Patented by the Royal Society in 1698, Saverys engine welches the first to continuously convert the heat from fire into useful work to pump water from deep mines.Engineering an EngineIn 1698 Thomas Savery designed the first engine that continuously converted heat from fire into useful work. His goal was to create a machine that would be more effective at removing water from deep mines than using horses hitched to a turnstile. His engine relied on a coal-fired steam boiler connected to a cylinder that was double-valved to a suction pipe and a discharge pipe. When the cylinder was filled with steam, it was down-washed with cold water, causing the steam to condense and form a partial vacuum, drawing water up the suction pipe. The steam supply valve was then opened and the boiler pressure forced the water up the discharge pipe for ground level disposal. In 1712 Savery partnered with Thomas Newcomen to build an advanced version with a piston between the atmospheric air and the steam, the piston connected to one end of a rocking beam. The other end of the beam was attached to rods that went down into the min e to opesatz the water pumps. A second innovation was to inject cold water directly into the steam to condense it, which greatly sped up the process. While restoring a Newcomen engine at the University of Scotland in 1765, James Watt discovered about 80 percent of the steam was wasted by premature condensation on the cold walls of the cylinder. To reduce this effect, he added a small condensing chamber adjacent to the main cylinder, thus letting the walls remain at a high temperature. He then converted the reciprocating motion of the beam to rotary motion, making the engines more compatible with mills and factories.Watt also worked with Joseph Black, a professor of physical chemistry at the University of Scotland, to determining specific heats and latent heats for many compounds. This involved defining the British thermal unit (Btu) as the amount of heat needed to raise the temperature of one pound of water one degree Fahrenheit. In the late 1700s Benjamin Thompson conducted experimen ts on gunpowder and later supervised a cannon boring factory. During cannon boring he noticed that the brass chips that left the barrel were hotter if the cutting tool was dull than if it was sharp. By collecting them in a pail of water as a crude calorimeter he could calculate the thermal effect, but was unable to instrument the cutting tool to measure the work input. In 1840 James Joule discovered what is universally known today as Joules Law E = I2R where E is the rate at which electric energy is dissipated when an electric current passes through a resistance. He later devised a simple apparatus for determining the equivalence of heat and work that consisted of a well-insulated rigid chamber containing a viscous fluid and fitted with a rotating propeller. He observed that for a given fluid, a definite amount of work expended always caused a definite rise in temperature of the fluid. In modern terms, he discovered the property internal energy, U.Joules experiment established heat a s transformable energy. Newtons mathematical expression of the first law is the result of Joules work with the usual sign conventions and with all terms expressed in the same units. It is essentially a statement of the conservation of all forms of energy. The world is rapidly approaching a crisis in the field of energy, as worldwide demand for fossil fuels continues to stress a diminishing supply. This impending shortfall has led to numerous investigations into alternate sources of energy, such as solar, geothermal, and biological, each having serious political implications when extended to an effective scale. Since all these approaches must satisfy the laws of thermodynamics, perhaps better communications between policy-makers and thermodynamicists would result in more rapid progress and better solutions.Adapted from Heat, Work, and the First Law by Howard W. Butler, for Mechanical Engineering, March 2008.In 1698, Thomas Savery designed the first engine that continuously converted h eat from fire into useful work.

Professional Growth, or Equilibrium
Professional Growth, or Equilibrium -Climbing career ladders vs. skating career ponds BALANCING ACT/Image Michael MoffaBreathing Again vs. Breathing BetterImagine two very different recruiters Recruiter A is always on the go, striving to make progress, to do better today than yesterday, to set himself or herself challenges, records and goals that will push the perfassonance envelope, while filling the pay envelope, and to climb higher and faster, toward the ever-beckoning summit of (competitive) success.Recruiter B is altogether different, and perhaps everywhere rarer in business circles. Bs only goal is to have no long-term goal other than to maintain an enjoyable status quono new records to be set, no harder challenges and tests to engage, no progress to be targeted. Instead, B likes things as they are, is satisfied with the status quo, and wants to conduct business the way his or her body condu cts breathingthe saatkorn tomorrow as today, namely, smoothly and enjoyably, with no requirement that the job results or the breathing be better tomorrow than they are today or were yesterday. Stability, elend progress, is the overarching goala variant of early retirement.Considering Your Opposites StyleAs a result, recruiters A and B will have very different, contrasting bedrngnisions of what constitutes job satisfaction, success, security, and meaningful work. What makes this important for you are the following questions and conjectures that follow later and one very intriguing fact The two styles are very similar to two physiological processeshomeostasis and heterostasisthat our own bodies use to keep us going and healthy. But first, the relevant questionsIf you are primarily a schriftart A recruiter, how did you end up choosing this as your preferred style? Same question for type B. (Here, type A is a broader concept than Type A, the popular categorization of time-stressed, goal- driven, short-fused, impatient go-getters, although it overlaps and includes it in many instances. In this context type A means a recruiter like the one referred to as recruiter A, above. The same applies for type B.)Have you ever considered switching from your habitual style to the contrasting style or at least giving it a try? If not, why not? What do you see as the costs and benefits of the two styles and the net gain/loss of the style you have adopted?Have there been any suggestions or indications that a style switch from type A to B, or vice versa, would be good/bad for you?How do you feel about the other style? Uneasy? Envious? Something else?Climbing Ladders vs. Skating on PondsThese are two ways of looking at and creating career goals and outcomesways that reflect two key physiological processes of life itself growth vs. equilibrium. The firstthe vertical ladder approachcareer goal/outcome and corresponding physiological process emphasize growth as an objective or outcome of paramount importance the second stresses equilibriummaintaining a career or physiological status quo, such as having static but stable client numbers or maintaining an optimal body temperature. Using body temperature as analogy, it could be argued that the ladder climber, type A needs the challenges that cause a rise in body temperature to a fever pitch, instead of maintenance tweaking to preserve the normal, basically unchanging stable temperature of 98.6 F.Are You Heterostatic A or Homeostatic B?Interestingly and arguably, these two styles approximately correspond to not only Type A and Type B personalitiesthe ladder climbers and pond skaters, respectively, but also to the two fundamental modes of existence, becoming vs. being and to two vital and contrasting physiological processes, mentioned above, known as heterostasis and homeostasis, a pair of concepts popularized by the researchers Hans Selye (the progenitor of stress science) and pioneering Harvard professor of physiology W alter Cannon, respectively. The aforementioned example of increasing body temperature, in the form of fever, as a response to an acute challenge, such as the flu, is a prime example of heterostasis, a process involving the activation of physiological defense through an adaptive departure from the normal stable state. In the domain of psychology, heterostasis, which is not yet in conventional dictionaries, has been derivatively defined as a tendency to seek new stimuli and challenges that will further growth (Raymond J. Corsini, Dictionary of Psychology, Routledge, 2001).Heterostasis is also manifested in having to run faster or longer to get the burnramping up the response to the challenge of maintaining fitness gains and rewards. By contrast, turning up your hypothalamus thermostat in the winter to maintain your body temperature or repeating familiar maintenance exercise routines with no new demands, no new levels of achievement exemplify homeostasis, the tendency to maintain normal physiological states by means of corrective physiological negative feedbackmuch as a household thermostat regulates and maintains room temperature. If your style and career goals/outcomes are growth-oriented, i.e., focused on becoming better and better, on advancement, on progress or on setting new and possibly harder challenges, on having evolving goals of advancement, you are in all likelihood a type A heterostatic ladder-climber who is not satisfied with mere endless equilibrium, and, as a result, will have priorities, rewards, stresses and perspectives that are completely different from the homeostatic pond-skater type B sitting next to you in your office.Health Risks in Overdoing a Good Thing? To the extent that there are correlations among having this heterostatic type A style, being a Type A personality (in the clinical sense of the time-stressed, impatient, short-tempered, controlling, competitive, etc., personality) and cardio-vascular disease, a type A or Type A recruiter m ay face heart-health issues related to this work and life style. However, it must be stressed that although various studies report significant positive correlations between low anger control and cardio-vascular disease or hypertension, critics argue that the correlations among all of the Type A traits are not so clear-cut. Hence, being future goal-oriented, a ladder-climbing heterostatic type or becoming oriented in and of themselves are not generally agreed-upon markers for heart-health risks or hypertension. What is also worthwhile to musiknote is that to the extent that physiological heterostasis plays an important, albeit transient emergency role complementary to normal homeostasis, there may a question to pose to recruiters who psychologically have made heterostasis permanent, rather than temporarye.g., in endless pursuit of higher levels of performance and achievement, as though gripped by a never-ending fever. That question is whether they have opted for a life style based on t oo much of a good thing, by making the heterostatic growth mode permanent, rather than occasional, and in so doing whether they have plunged themselves into something like a permanent crisis mode and exposed themselves to any risks.(Analogies between this question about being in a permanent heterostatic individual growth mode and debates about the wisdom of endless economic or population growth should be obvious.)If permanent, unceasing career heterostasis is an unhealthy aberration, it would be akin to making what should be a temporary physiologicalfight or flight response a permanent, rather than emergency posture in the office or at homewhich, as I reported in Zebra Stress Management for Recruiters, demonstrably correlates with elevated health risks, such as hypertension, ulcers and cardio-vascular disease.Mixed Functions, Mixed TypesEven though the two pure types heterostatic ladder climbers and homeostatic pond skatersare easily sharply distinguished conceptually, in fact, thes e are not mutually exclusive in their operations and can therefore be mixed in various proportions and aspects of your work, just as every organism blends them. For example, in a bout of the flu, temperature will advance to the level of a fever, in order to heterostatically fight off a virusbut only as long as necessary, i.e., temporarily, while heart rate may, as a result of homeostasis, remain unaltered.Hence, having a long-term homeostatic, equilibrium job base, e.g., with fixed and stable hours, that is supplemented with interspersed occasional heterostatic spurts of growth and moments of Type A behavior would perfectly parallel the behavior of a healthy body and its physiology.Career Ladders and Two Kinds of PondsRecruiter A wants to move vertically and climb ladders recruiter B wants to move horizontally and skate an unchanging pond that is large enough to be interesting. However, to the extent that both A and B can be described using a pond metaphor and as pond dwellers, recru iter A, the heterostatic Type A, becoming achiever, is much more likely to have bigger challenge hunger and strive to be some kind of fish (preferably a big one) in a big pond filled with very big (rival) fish, even if it means starting out and possibly indefinitely remaining a small fry. On the other hand, recruiter B, the homeostatic pond skater, looks forward to effortlessly gliding over a much smaller pond, in and over which he or she can, comparatively, enjoy being a reigning big fish or at least becoming one without nearly as much effort as would be required by emulating heterostatic recruiter A.When Your Job Mimics Your BodyJust as your bodys physiology will, when required, complement its normal homeostatic functioning, e.g.,, maintaining O2 levels, with emergency heterostatic activity, e.g., elevating your bodys temperatures, on the job, you may attempt to homeostatically maintain hours worked per week, i.e., endeavor to keep them constant, while heterostatically ratcheting up your income, your client numbers, your geographical range of operation or your network sizethereby redefining new equilibria (stable equilibrium points or states) for yourself, from which to launch your next heterostatic advance when the need or urge arises. The disanalogy with heterostatic physiological processes is that some of the results of your efforts, e.g., a larger number of clients, unlike body temperature after a fever, do not fall back to earlier levels, but hopefully remain permanently elevated. However, what should taper off like body temperature and the processes that elevated them is the level of effort that was required to create those new achieved highs, even though some lesser effort may be required to maintain and sustain them. Hence, if the key work parameter is effort, then it should increase and subside just like body temperature during and after a case of flu. If it never does, then your efforts will have become permanently heterostaticwhich represents an ab normal prolongation of that kind of process and activity.Heterostatic Becoming vs. Homeostatic Being Einsteins ObservationViewed commonsensically and intuitively, it stands to reason that the type A, Type A ladder-climbing growth-oriented heterostatically-driven recruiter is also more likely to be becoming-focused, always with at least one eye on the future and progress, rather than being-focused, the latter designating a focus on the present and the goal of keeping it as pleasant as it has been, again, like maintaining ones breathing or blood pressure just as they are, when one is satisfied with them as they are. This is the distinction reflected in Albert Einsteins observation that Americans are much more preoccupied than Europeans are with becoming, at the expense of being (satisfied living in the now, in the moment). The type B, Type B, pond-skating, equilibrium-oriented, homeostatically-regulated recruiter is, in progress-preoccupied America, going to be harder to find.Unless, o f course, all the type A recruiters switch, keel over or quit from stress or worse.
